Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly said the U.S. health regulator agency has approved their drug Alimta - in combination with cisplatin - for patients with locally advanced and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. In the U.S. alone, there are 180,000 new cases of this condition annually.

Alimta was approved in 2004 as a treatment for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, and then as a single agent for the second-line treatment of patients with lung cancer after prior chemotherapy treatment.

This third approved use of Alimta was based on a trial including 1,725 patients, in which the median survival rate was increased to 10.3 months.

Alimta generated $ 522 million dollars in the first half of 2008.
